WEEK 12
• Where (in which stage) digital storytelling fits within a lesson plan promotes acquisition of the learning outcome(s).
Digital storytelling can be used effectively at various stages in a lesson plan and encourages the acquisition of learning outcomes for each stage. At the beginning of the lesson, digital storytelling can be used to arouse students' curiosity and interest in the subject of the lesson. In this way, students gain initial information about the content of the lesson and their motivation to learn increases. This process provides students with the opportunity to reflect on their own learning process and see areas where they are lacking. Digital storytelling, as an effective tool in these stages, increases students' active participation and ensures that learning outcomes are permanent.
• Digital storytelling serves as a powerful vehicle for technology integration, enabling individuals to create, share, and engage with multimedia stories across various educational and professional settings. So when you consider the digital storytelling application as a whole (story writing, storyboard editing and transferring to digital media), could you explain the relationship between digital storytelling and technology integration deeply?
Digital storytelling and technology integration make students’ learning processes more creative, interactive and meaningful. Technology captures students’ attention and makes them active participants by adding visual, auditory and textual elements to stories. In addition, digital tools enable students to collaborate, develop problem-solving and digital literacy skills.
• What do think about the effectiveness of digital storytelling on the learning and teaching process?
Digital storytelling makes the learning and teaching process more interactive and meaningful. It draws students' attention by using visual, auditory and textual elements, concretizes information and supports permanent learning. Students develop creative thinking, problem solving and digital skills with digital stories. In addition, creating their own stories increases students' participation, improves their self-efficacy and communication skills.
• How do you think students will engage with your digital storytelling activity? What outcomes do you expect in terms of their skills or understanding?
Students develop creative thinking, digital skills and communication skills through digital storytelling. This activity allows students to gain skills such as writing text, using visuals and sounds, and collaborating. Expected outcomes include students strengthening their creative thinking, digital literacy, empathy, communication skills and reflecting on their own learning processes. In addition, students gain self-confidence and develop their narrative skills while creating their own stories.
• Describe how you developed Digital Storytelling activity.
o What is the real life problem in your story?
o What are the challenges your story heroes face?
o Do you think that the topic of the story and your learning objectives are parallel? Explain?
I developed the Digital Storytelling activity to enable students to interact while having fun and learning. In my story, I tell the story of a character named Elif who discovers the importance of her 5 senses by getting sick. One day, Elif gets the flu, gets sick, and realizes how important her senses are during this process. The story begins with Elif's senses being limited due to her illness. For example, the loss of her senses of smell and taste causes her to have difficulty eating, and the weakening of her senses of sight and hearing makes it difficult for her to perceive the world. During this process, Elif's mother tries to help her and tells her how important it is for her quality of life for her 5 senses to function healthily.
The difficulties faced by the characters are the difficult processes that Elif goes through to cope with her illness and regain the lost functions of her sensory organs. Her mother tries various ways to heal Elif and teach her how important her senses are. The story highlights the mother's support, health awareness, and Elif's efforts to heal herself.
The story's plot and my learning objectives are parallel because the story was created to help students understand the importance of the 5 senses. Elif's illness and loss of senses help students establish a concrete connection to the functions of the senses. In addition, her mother's explanation to Elif about the relationship between senses and health during this process supports my learning objective. My learning objective is to teach children the place of the 5 senses in our lives and to present this information in an entertaining way.
• Write at least 5 prompt examples with interaction/feedback from ChatGPT that you used in your conversations with ChatGPT specifically related to digital storytelling activity. Create at least 3 rounds of interaction (e.g., Prompt → Response → New Prompt).
• Explain on your blog how you shaped your lesson plan and its activities by analyzing ChatGPT's responses.
Prompt 1:
“How can I explain the difficulties Elif faces during her recovery? What might happen as she tries to regain her senses?”
Answer: “As Elif begins to recover, she tries different methods to regain each of her senses. For example, she does eye exercises with colored objects to regain her sense of sight. She tries different aromas and foods to regain her sense of smell and taste, but she has a hard time at first. Elif’s happiness increases as she regains each of her senses, but the recovery process takes time and she sometimes shows impatience. This causes her to understand the value of her senses even more deeply.”
New Prompt:
“How can I explain how Elif’s mother is patient and supportive during this process? How can the mother’s patience be emphasized?”
Prompt 2:
“I want to write a story where Elif gets sick. How can I start to emphasize the importance of the 5 senses?”
Answer: “Elif wakes up one morning and feels very weak. First, she notices that her senses of smell and taste have disappeared. When she tries to eat breakfast, she cannot taste the food she loves, and this upsets her very much. The weakening of her senses of sight and hearing also makes it difficult for Elif to perceive the world. Her mother decides to help Elif through this process so that she can get better.”
New Prompt:
“This is a good start. Now give me some suggestions on how Elif’s mother can help her.”
Prompt 3:
“Can you write an ending that tells how Elif realizes the value of her senses after she recovers?”
Answer: “After Elif recovers, she understands how important each of her senses are. She begins to appreciate seeing colors with her eyes again, the music she hears in her ears, and the tastes. When she eats her favorite food, she realizes how valuable her sense of taste is. She now smells each scent more carefully and appreciates the world around her more. Finally, Elif expresses how important her senses are by thanking her mother. This reinforces the gratitude that both Elif and her mother feel for each other.”
New Prompt:
“Finally, I want to add a lesson or piece of advice that will strengthen the message of the story. What message can I add?”
Prompt 4:
“I want to teach the importance of the 5 senses in my story. What kind of activity or application can I add to the story for each sense? How can students learn with these activities?”
*“A different activity can be organized for each of Elif’s senses. For example:
For smell, Elif can try to distinguish different fruit and flower smells by closing her eyes. This teaches children the importance of the sense of smell.
For taste, Elif realizes how valuable foods are before tasting them. This tells children the place of the sense of taste in their lives.
For sight, Elif can enjoy seeing again by doing eye exercises with colorful objects.
For touch, Elif can get to know different textures and do an activity with fabrics or natural materials.
For hearing, Elif’s mother makes her listen to different sounds. This teaches her the value of the sense of hearing.”*
New Prompt:
“How can I make each activity more fun and interactive? Can you give me some suggestions that will increase student participation?”
Prompt 5:
“How can Elif’s mother help her? Can you suggest some creative ways that the mother can teach her the importance of her senses?”
“Elif’s mother can use some creative ways to teach her the importance of her senses. For example, she can have Elif play a game where she closes her eyes and recognizes different smells, thus teaching her how important her sense of smell is. She can also have Elif taste different foods and explain how her quality of life changes when her sense of taste is lost. Her mother can emphasize the criticality of her sense of hearing by playing different sounds in Elif’s ears. These types of activities help Elif understand her senses more deeply.”
New Prompt:
“These are great suggestions. So, how can I explain the challenges Elif faces while trying to regain her senses during her recovery?”
Analysis of ChatGPT Responses in Blog Post
In my interactions with ChatGPT, I can explain how I proceeded in shaping the digital storytelling activity and how my lesson plan developed as follows:
Developing the Story: ChatGPT helped me clarify the theme of my story at the beginning. I wanted to create an educational and emotional story based on Elif’s illness and loss of senses. ChatGPT’s suggestions helped me make my story more meaningful. Interaction and Feedback: Each response from ChatGPT contributed to the development of the story. It provided various scenarios that students could interact with, such as how Elif’s mother could help, and elements such as patience and support were enriched in the story. This interaction allowed the story to gain both an educational and emotional aspect.
Great work on the Digital Storytelling activity! The story of Elif is a fun and engaging way to teach preschoolers about the importance of the 5 senses, perfectly aligning with your learning objectives. The health awareness aspect is a nice touch to help kids understand the value of their senses in daily life. Also your prompts are very good example .
